Apple's New Lithium-Polymer Battery

01/07/2009

Apple's new 17-inch MacBook Pro contains an innovative new battery that will help the MacBook become more environmentally friendly. Laptop computers contain removable batteries that generally need to be replaced after 2 years, which results in a lot of waste which is often not recycled properly. For the new MacBook, Apple is using a non-removable lithium-polymer battery instead of a traditional removable lithium-ion battery. The new lithium-polymer battery can last 8 hours per charge and can be recharged up to 1,000 times before it drops to 80% of its original capacity, which is when performance starts to suffer. Apple uses "Adaptive Charging" to prolong the life of the battery by varying the current used to charge the battery. This can give the battery a lifespan of up to 5 years.
