Recycling Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Bulbs

12/27/2008

An easy first step towards going green is to switch to compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs. CFL bulbs last 10 times longer and use 66% less energy than incandescent bulbs. CFL bulbs do, however, contain a small amount of mercury which means that they need to be properly disposed of. The good news is that stores like Home Depot and Ikea now offer free CFL recycling at their retail stores. Before bringing CFL bulbs to be recycled, you should put them in a sealed plastic bag to contain the mercury in case the bulb breaks.
