Obama Pushes Tougher Emissions Standards
President Barack Obama urged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider a request by the state of California to enforce its own vehicle emissions standards. During the Bush administration, California requested to impose its own carbon dioxide emissions standards which were more strict than the federal government's standards, but were denied the request. The request by Obama will also help other states to move forward in setting their own state standards and the President has already ordered the Deparment of Transportation (DOT) to set new fuel efficiency standards for 2011 cars. Opponents of stricter guidelines claim that it would put further pressure on an already struggling automotive industry, which needed to request billions of dollars in bailout aid in order to stay in business.
